Mommy Wants To Borrow
A Dish Of Ice Cream

Jeanette Berry

I answered the door to find our little neighbor boy, Stevie, with a dish in his hand. "Mrs. Berry, my mommy wants to borrow a dish of ice cream." I smiled as I got the ice cream for him. I knew his mommy was not home and chuckled about what she would think if she knew that she had "borrowed" a dish of ice cream. He always did such cute things and our whole family enjoyed his antics.

"If ye ask anything in my name I will do it…" I know that tacking the words in Jesus' name on the end of a prayer is not a magic phrase that guarantees your request, nevertheless, I found it difficult to grasp the meaning of that verse. Then I realized that Stevie had asked for ice cream in his mother's name. As I thought about that, I reflected on how often I pray for things for which I feel so unworthy to ask. God might not want to give to me, but because I am secure in my relationship with Christ I feel the liberty to ask in His name.

The second is that because of the relationship that Stevie's mother had with me, he knew he could ask what he wanted. Because his mother was my friend, that involved him in the relationship, too. He was confident I would give him the ice cream. By the same token, because of the relationship of the Father with the Son, Jesus, I too have access to the Father and can ask what I will. John 14:14 says "If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it."
